Vegetable tanned leather ( bark or oak tanning) is a 6 month process that soaks the leather in water and plant matter. It is the oldest type of tanning. Western saddles, shoe soles, belts etc. are made with this type of leather. Saddle soap and pure neatsfoot oil are best for this.
Chrome tanning is a 24 hour process using chromium salts and dyes. Garments, upholstery and any soft cowhide. We recommend LEXOL cleaner and conditioner for these leathers. It is the only product that does not darken the pastel shades.
Oil tanning is used primarily on deer, elk, and buffalo. It leaves the hide very soft with a slight oil feel. Some cow is tanned this way also. Once again LEXOL is recommended.
Brain tanning. Rarely is this method used for anything other than Native American leathers. If you have some LEXOL works.
